Our Story
Our story begins in the early twentieth century and continues today, with new locations, plants, and talent.

In the early 20th century, both maternal and paternal grandparents of K-Five Construction’s founding siblings owned construction companies. William J. Newman's group, the W.J. Newman Company, worked on a majority of the caisson work that downtown skyscrapers are still built upon. He revolutionized excavation methods, introducing the use of the steam shovel and laid the foundation for the Palmer House, the Board of Trade, the Civic Opera, and the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. George Krug's group, the George Krug Excavating Company, did extensive excavating and construction work in the downtown area as well.
The marriage of William Newman's daughter Josephine to George Krug's son George in 1941 provided the future foundation for the current owners of K-Five Construction. George continued Krug Excavating Company after WWII and built one of Chicago’s most trafficked roadways- the Eisenhower Expressway.
Currently Josephine and George Krug's children and grandchildren are owners and involved in the business. Their eldest son, George Krug Jr., took the legacy of Krug Excavating and founded K-Five Construction in 1977 ("K" for Krug and "Five" for the five Krug siblings).
Originally started as a residential paving company, K-Five Construction has grown into one of the largest unionized heavy highway paving contractors in the State of Illinois, in both government and private areas. The family company is currently led by the late George Krug’s son, Robert G. Krug, as President, and daughter, Jennifer Krug McNaughton, as Executive Vice President.
As a family owned and operated business, we are proud of our extended family at K-Five.
