Assistant Manager of Asphalt Operations 

This position is responsible for assisting the General Manager of Manufacturing in the oversite of all aspects of the manufacturing process, including production, maintenance & personnel at six hot mix asphalt plants in the Chicagoland area that produce and distribute hot mix asphalt, cold patch, and select aggregate to customers. This position reports to the General Manager of Manufacturing and collaborates with a variety of departments including: operations management, sales, accounting and estimating

Responsibilities

 

Maintaining organized raw material pricing files

Maintaining organized customer and job pricing files

Ensure compliance with all health, safety and environmental regulations.

Maintain good relationships with customers and assisting in the company’s sales approach when necessary.

Helping align goals of asphalt production with QA/QC standards and specifications

Track historical plant production data

Through the use of KPI’s, plan, develop and implement new methods and procedures designed to improve operations, reduce operating costs and better utilize equipment, labor and materials

Assist in analyzing plant costs to ensure budgets are being achieved

Working closely with Plant Asphalt Superintendents, Quality Control and Sales department

Work with the Plant Superintendent in analyzing and recommending capital improvement projects

Work with the Plant Superintendent in organizing and coordinating systems to ensure preventative maintenance is done on all equipment on a scheduled basis

Assist with special projects as needed

Required Skills

 

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of management and manufacturing experience, 3-5 year of construction experience is preferred. Experience developing and implementing budgets as well as working alongside QC/QA programs, combined with a strong understanding of financial statements and their impact on business. Candidate must be proficient with computers including Microsoft Office and capable of creating high level Excel and Access reports. Candidate has an ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment that requires technical information and decision making, able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner, apply analytical concepts to complex business problems. Candidate must be willing to travel locally out of the office to visit plants and meet customers as needed. Additionally, the candidate must hold valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record, willing to submit to background and drug testing (pre and post-employment) as may be required. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4 year university preferred or equivalent manufacturing industry experience.

Junior Estimator/Estimating Intern


Junior Estimator/Estimating Intern to work under supervision of estimators assisting in every aspect of preparing complete bid proposals on projects including analyzing plans and specifications to develop detailed cost estimates for materials, equipment and labor required to construct the project.

 

Responsibilities


Review proposal contract documents, and attend pre-bid meetings as required to determine scope of work.

Prepare and organize documents required for complete and responsive bid closing and submittal.

Calculate takeoffs from plans to determine quantity accuracy.

Visit project for comprehensive understanding of site logistics, restrictions & conditions.

Develop strategy for execution of work in the most cost effective manner.

Prepare detailed breakdown of components and elements of estimates, including tasks, subtasks, production rates and unit costs.

Review potential Value Engineering opportunities.

In conjunction with the Project Managers, update current project schedules and prepare preliminary / bid construction schedule.

Develop and review project risk with Estimating team. Solicit quotes from material suppliers and potential subcontractors.

Maintain and expand communications and relationships with vendor database, including DBE / VOSB outreach efforts.

During the bidding process, organize & maintain files of working documents, subcontractor and material supplier quotes in order to ensure the accuracy of estimate figures.

Review, analyze, and incorporate historical data from bid tabs, previous job estimates, FOIA requests, and completed projects to help with the preparation of the estimate.

Work closely with Operations, Area, Project, and Materials Managers during the bidding process to ensure accuracy of data used to estimate the project.

If bidding is successful and job is awarded facilitate with project managers the process of bid conversion into job cost setup.

Once job is awarded, promptly work up and obtain execution of subcontracts and material purchase orders including insurance compliance.

Lead the hand off of information to project management to be fully educated in all strategies, opportunities and risks that were recognized in the bidding process.

After project is awarded provide relevant notes, subcontractor list, material prices, haul prices, and other related information to project manager.

Provide material requirement needs & information to Quality Control and Manufacturing managers.

Review all change order requests prepared by project management to confirm if maximized profit opportunity.

Conduct progress and post construction review of projected and actual construction costs compared to estimated bid costs.

Perform additional assignments per management direction.

 

Required Skills

 

Engineering or technical school experience is required. Associate or Bachelor’s Degree - Engineering, Technology or Construction Management; Minimum of 1-2 years estimating experience in Highway, Airfield, Streets & Roads Construction; ability to estimate multiple projects at one time; excellent organizational & time management skills; ability to work independently, with strong attention to detail, and ability to resolve issues/problems; excellent verbal & written communications and computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, B2W, HCSS, Microsoft Project. Evidence of Business / Project Management skills through experience, Primavera, Carlson, AGTEK, creative thinker, leadership skills, personable, energetic and a team player.

Project Manager

This role is responsible for overseeing and running construction projects, delivering on time and under budget; overseeing all aspects of the job from start-up to final close out.

 

 

Responsibilities


Manage construction projects through completion on time and under budget;

obtain initial bid information from estimator, distribute to superintendent, project foreman and appropriate scheduling superintendent for preliminary evaluation;

schedule start-up meeting to disseminate information from estimator to field personnel and bring questions and/or problems to estimator and various staff members;

communicate job responsibilities; lead CMP schedule preparation with superintendent/project foreman and schedule utilizing rates ‘as bid’ and quantity take-off information of major items to verify production rates and proposed durations;

prepare and submit pre-construction shop drawings, technical submittal, administration and other required submittal, as necessary;

authorize correspondence to both owner and subcontractor when required; act as primary liaison with owner over contract matters;

chair progress meetings with the owner/consultant and or coordination meetings with subcontractor where necessary;

generate CPM submittals and upset with scheduler from date furnish by superintendent/project foreman;

ensure steady cash flow/payment estimate processing by owner;

identify, authorize, submit and pursue delays, extra work and/or claims, where justified, with assistance from superintendent/project foreman;

maintain change order/authorization log; maintain shop drawings/submittal log;

billing for all contact work, as well as estimating, submitting, negotiation and billing work;

prepare Job Status Report together with Superintendent/Project Foreman when required;

prepare and submit final documentation to include: complete material inspection deficiencies; superintendent/Project Foreman to obtain items, written agreement to final quantities, SBE/DBE agreements with Owners, final quantities with Owner, Superintendent/Project Foreman input with quantities, final documents with Owner, and consent of surety…; overall responsibility for profitability of job;

must possess strong organizational and time management skills;

outstanding customer relationships management skills, must be able to work with many other stakeholders to manage project requirements;

excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills, solid speaking, facilitation and presentation skills.

Assistant Project Manager

This role is responsible in supporting project managers in the management of construction projects from inception to completion on time and under budget.

Project Foreman

 

This role manages day-to-day work on multiple paving jobs. Employment is 30 weeks, plus.

 

Responsibilities

Plan, direct, or coordinate, usually through subordinate supervisory personnel, activities concerned with the construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, and systems.

Participate in the conceptual development of a construction project and oversee its organization, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation.

Required Skills

Candidates should have 3-10 years of general construction experience, working knowledge of OSHA  safety regulations, and good communication and organizational skills; must possess strong organizational and time management skills; interpersonal and communication skills; solid speaking, facilitation and presentation skills; work independently as well as part of a team; lead labor force for preparation/support activities (patch removal, drill and grout, etc.…); maintain direct motivation to labor (motivator/pusher); make sure equipment is fueled, oiled, cleaned and protected; maintain/store and inventory small tools; conduct toolbox safety meetings weekly; prepare time sheet (submit daily to PM); must be a self-starter, willing to do what it takes to get the job done.

 

A minimum of 3 years highway construction experience, 2 years as a project foreman.

Asphalt Paving Foreman

This role manages the day-to-day work of the paving crew. Employment is 30 weeks, plus, and a member of the appropriate union in good standing.
